At the invitation of the Royal Thai Embassy in Ankara, 5 Thai Buddhist monks, including Phrakhru Wirotthammachan, Abbot  of Wat Pumud in Kanchanaburi Province, Phra Manop Chuenchom, Abbot of Wat Ariyawongsaram in Ratchaburi Province, Phrakhru Winaithorn Saman Manit, Abbot of Wat Langthongdang in Nakhonpathom Province, Phrakhru Prakasphuththayan, Wat Santinivas in Sweden, and Phra Prao Narksaeng, Wat Pah Chalitanusorn in Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, paid a visit to the Republic of Turkey from 12 to 20 July 2012. The purpose of the visit was to provide the Thai community in Turkey an opportunity to make a merit and to listen to the monks’ teaching.

The activities of the monks included a visit of  6 Thai prisoners  at Bakırköy Kadın Cezaevi (Prison) in Istanbul on 13 July 2012 by Phrakhru Wirotthammachan, Phra Manop Chuenchom and Mrs. Thanaporn Manathat, spouse of the Ambassador, and the food-offering ceremonies and Dhamma teachings at Pera Thai Restaurant in Istanbul and at the Thai Ambassador’s Residence in Ankara on 15 July and 18 July 2012, respectively.  Both functions were well attended by both Thai and Turkish people.  H.E. Mr. Nguyen The Cuong, Ambassador of Vietnam to Turkey, H.E. Mrs. Bharathi Davina Wijeratne, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Turkey, and diplomats from the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, the Embassy of the Republic of Korea and the Embassy of Socialist Democratic Republic of Sri Lanka also attended the ceremony at the residence of the Ambassador of Thailand in Ankara.

The Thai Community in Turkey was immensely pleased with the merit-making ceremony which was the first time in Turkey.  In addition to food-offering, the participants, both Thai and Turkish, donated money amounted to THB 82,821 to the monks, which in turn donated the whole amount to the Royal Thai Embassy as a fund for helping Thai prisoners in Turkey.

Turkey has long been recognized as a moderate Muslim democracy with secular constitution which understands and appreciates cultural and religious differences. The warm welcome received by the Thai monks right from their arrival in Turkey is the most evident proof of religious tolerance in Turkey.
